Day 5: Baubles to you

As this was my first day back at work since deciding to begin this project, I was interested to know what suitable photographic subjects might come my way in the course of a working day.

It was as I suspected.

An average work day sadly involves a very narrow trajectory of experience, depressingly so and if I was to stick to the notion of the 'Photo a Day' reflecting something of what has happened to me that day then after 365 days of this, I will be presiding over the blog equivalent of the lone pianist in a sad, sequined shirt serenading the man mopping the floor. You will all have gone home long ago (if indeed you were ever here, but that's a later conversation that I shall have with myself) and I may well have slit my wrists in the realisation that I have catalogued on film the interior life of an immobile ant.

So Baubles to that! This won't be a catalogue of my day but if there is something worth photographing such as the large, shiny balls I hung in my office before Christmas, then perhaps, just perhaps....

I'm going to call this one 'Self-portrait with balls'

Day 4: Defenders of the Realm!

This was a bit of fun inspired by David Levinthal although his compositions seemed to have a bit more gravitas to them than mine. I was wandering around town this morning looking for possible toy figures to use in a similar fashion but they were mostly either ridiculously expensive - another good reason for not starting that collection of Star Trek figurines - or I just could not bring myself to spend good money on them - Barbie and Sponge Bob Square Pants being a case in point! So I settled for some Pirates of the Caribbean characters in the Poundstretcher on South Bridge and I must say I like the effect.

I'll be coming back to this one soon, once I've come up with some more imaginative compositions but for the moment, my TV and the Guardian Travel section are both being rather well defended, don't you think!

Day 3: One that almost worked

The classic problem of a moving subject with very little interest in stopping still for the camera and no zoom to compensate - you get what you can. Somehow the eyes almost compensate for the lack of a chin.

Day 2: Face cropping and Fibonacci

It's funny when you do the backward maths where less becomes more, halves become wholes and cliches suddenly abound everywhere you look! Chop off half a face and end up with a more complete picture than the original. This may well be the project for week one. Halves that make wholes, thirds that make triangles that make classic compositions. Maths has never been my strong point so if someone has an easy way to explain either or both the Fibonacci and Golden Section dynamics to me, I'd be very grateful.

Day 1: Happy New Year

I decided to do this at about 2am this morning, admittedly in a slightly champagne-soaked state of mind. A grand new year project which may end up on the 'bitten off, more and chew' slag pile of great ideas by mid-January, or maybe not... you don't know until you try. Today in more delicate sobriety, I still thought it worth doing so here it is. A photo a day for the 365 and a quarter days of 2010 but they need to be worthwhile pics, not just a snap of my toenails at the end of a hectic day. Since it's the 1st January today and I'm still a bit tender from the festivities last night, I decided to set the bar very low.

So here it is, today's newspaper, not my usual read but the only non-red headed paper in the shop. I wanted to just get the date but it's come out so small it's barely worth it. Oh and the ISO was too high because I couldn't find my tripod connector. Let's start with excuses and the New Labour anthem from 1997! Things can only get better....
